Kirche St. Petri

ST. PETER'S CHURCH & HUGENOT CABINET
The heritage of the Huguenots

St. Peter's Chapel, a fieldstone structure built in the 12th century and first mentioned in a document in 1355, together with its churchyard, are part of the Huguenot heritage. The exact construction of the romanesque church is not documented. What is certain is that it is the oldest sacred building in the town of Burg. The Potsdam Edict issued by Elector Friedrich Wilhelm of Brandenburg in 1685 triggered a large influx of migrants and the Huguenots founded a French and a German-speaking community in Burg in 1691. The Huguenots converted St. Peter's Chapel, which had been assigned to them, into St. Peter's Church from 1691. Before that, it stood empty for a long time and was even used as a brewery. The interior and the sacristy were designed in neo-Gothic style around 1880, and the organ was built by the master organ builder Wilhelm Sauer in 1882. Today it serves the Protestant Reformed St. Peter's parish in Burg. Directly next to the church is a half-timbered house that is more than 300 years old and houses the Hugenottenkabinett. Interesting data and documents of religious refugees can be viewed there.
