Berliner Torturm

ENGLISH

BERLIN GATE TOWER
Defense and watchtower of the town

The tower from the 14th century is part of the 2nd Burg city fortification which passed its baptism of fire in 1629 during the 30-year war and gave the city of Burg the title: "...a well kept city". During the 30-year war, the town of Burg, and Swedish troops fought fierce battles at the three- story Berlin Gate Tower from 1626-1644. The tower is connected by the Hexenturm and the Kuhturm and is one of the former 30 defending watchtowers along the town wall.

The dungeon on the first floor once served as a prison. The middle section with its embrasures was used for defense and as the prison guard's quarters. The upper floor housed a retreat with a fireplace for the guards of the town wall, reminiscent of sacred buildings. The large open fireplace in the upper room, above which hangs a replica of the early Burger coat of arms from 1550, gave the guards cozy warmth in the cold season.

The viewing platform offers an atmospheric panorama over Burg and the Elbe lowlands.
